C&T Matrix – dedicated to bringing cutting-edge products to the Folding Carton and Corrugated markets.
Modern corrugated and box making plants are slick, streamlined operations driven by retailers and brands needing just-in-time delivery, shorter runs and faster turn-around times.
No company in this sector is the same – with production runs varying from short to long. The needs are vast and diverse to meet specific customer needs. Creasing matrix may not always spring to mind as top of the list when it comes to a production investment strategy, but it can be one of the most important factors in the successful productivity of a plant.
Leading supplier of specialist creasing matrix products and accessories to the print and packaging industries, C&T Matrix plays a global role in ensuring that the evolving needs of the packaging producer are always taken into account.
The right choice of creasing matrix can offer significant advantages to the production environment and provide cost saving benefits, enhanced durability as well as the improved creasing. The company already offers several brands of creasing matrix products under two product divisions: Channel and Trimplex (the C&T of Matrix), including the brands Original, XTC, Trax Plus, Jazz and Kiss products.
With a history of product innovation already established, C&T Matrix set out to develop a range of specific products specifically for the carton board, packaging and corrugated industries. Managing Director at C&T Matrix, Simon Shenton explains:
“We are dedicated to bringing cutting-edge products to the market place but at the core of this is the ability to design and manufacture new and specialist products.”
Rigorous testing for a demanding environment
An example of this is its cutting-edge product PINK® matrix designed predominantly for the folding carton market. It was developed as part by C&T Matrix’s extensive R&D programme involving rigorous test and trial procedures. The key component of this matrix is ROSADIUM – a super strong and flexible patented product that offers the market an alternative to counter plates – essential for improving the turnaround speed.
Simon Shenton explains:
“One of the key characteristics of PINK® is its unequalled resilience with the number of impressions achievable in excess of 150,000. We have been testing this product in independent tests, and have proved that PINK® is one of the most long-lasting systems available.”
Jonathan Haapanen, Vice President of Operations at Haapenen Brothers USA, commented,
“We have recently switched to PINK and feel that it offers a few very important advantages over what we were using previously. PINK has a tighter fitting and deeper locator which has a better hold on the creasing rule. This creates perfect positioning of the matrix on the cutting plate in relation to the creasing rule. This eliminates extended make-ready times due to re-applying matrix due to poor positioning which can cause pinching, which results in bursting of the substrate. The broad chamfer of Pink allows the substrate to move over the matrix without catching. This eliminates the need for added knife chamfering, or the use of tape to create ramps to allow smooth substrate travel over the cutting plate. The creasing channel is more defined offering more precise folding. Folding is easier, and the products convert better on both buckle folder and folder/gluer. We have found that PINK does not delaminate and has terrific durability.”
Reversing cracking problems
Cracking is a cause for a slow down in productivity. The corrugated and packaging sectors demand for one-pass production has also been the driving force behind C&T Matrix’s continual development of its Reverse Bend Matrix.
Simon Shenton explains:
“Over the last 18 months reverse bend sales have grown, especially in the corrugated and packaging sectors – not just in the UK but globally.”
Ideal for corrugated and fluted materials, the product now features an improved and flexible locator. The new design has been specifically engineered to tackle the packaging sectors most important requirements. Shenton explains:
“Unlike traditional products, Reverse Bend prevents cracking problems associated with full ink coverage from the unprinted side of the sheet. The design means concertina folds are now possible in one pass, avoiding the need for two separate passes.” This capability Shenton feels, is an essential tool for packaging companies looking to cost save “The Reverse Bend Matrix improves the registration of the creases and prevents potential damage to the sheet which a second pass may create.”
The locater, also developed by C&T, features a flexible design to reflect the need for greater customer flexibility by allowing a wider variety of rule widths (between 1mm). This gives a better fit over a wider range of creasing rule, taking up a better tolerance.
Adapting to change in the corrugated industry
With the demand for corrugated packaging increasing and the trend for small flutes and high quality graphic boards infiltrating traditional folding carton applications, the needs of the corrugated industry have changed. Another pioneering product from C&T is Corrugate; its unique design prevents the industry problem of ‘knuckling’ – when the board creases upon folding with no clear definition to the crease and without a clean crease.
C&T Matrix’s Corrugate reduces ‘knuckling’ by creating a holding form in which to crease. According to the company the result is a more accurate and better-defined crease.
Enhanced productivity for the box converting plants was also at the forefront of C&T Matrix’s development strategy. Shenton explains:
“We listened to the corrugated industry during the development stages to boost productivity and quality while avoiding expensive additional make-ready or machine downtime.”He adds: “Corrugate, when used in conjunction with the correct rubber solution, will also reduce production problems including cracking of the outer liner or the printed colour and fishtailing misalignments.”
Meeting the needs of the customer
C&T Matrix uses a consultative approach to its business and has strengthened its technical team to ensure experience and knowledge gives full support service across the UK. Shenton concludes:
“We start the process by conducting a full audit of our customer’s requirements. We can then make recommendations and give practical advice and problem-solving ideas. This information can save customers’ time and money.”
C&T Matrix offers several brands of creasing matrixes, including Kiss, Jazz, XTC and Trax Plus. The company also manufactures and supplies a broad range of accessories for diemaking, diecutting and print finishing, including ejection rubbers, counter material and patch tape.
